I wish I could put into words how difficult breaking the 2:20:00 marathon barrier was. It took me training from 1992 to 2007 to break that barrier, non-stop, endless training in all weather conditions. I trained on holidays, my birthday. I fit runs in on vacations. Name the day and I was out putting in the work.
Some will say, “Not really Nate, you ran your first marathon in 2002”. Yes, true. My debut was the 2002 NYC Marathon. I ran a 2:43:36 starting in last place (32,189th place) for a lung cancer research armed forces team.
I finished in 253rd overall, moved up, took my hits and got to the finish line as fast as I could, passed a lot of people and raised a big chunk of cash for charity. That part of it was awesome. I hated it but at the same time I loved it. The crowd, new York City and knowing I was running for something greater than myself.
5 years later I ended up finishing 4th overall and top American at the 2007 California International Marathon with a 2008 USA Olympic Trials “A” standard time. That result was due to the same tactics and strategies I am teaching in the Sub 4 Hour Marathon Pro course.
