20 Week Marathon Training Plan

20 Week Marathon Training Plan

I’ll tell you what I personally think of a 20 week marathon training plan.

It is too long of a training block.

Can you succeed at the distance training for 5 months?

I believe so but you had best be very careful.

I’ve broken the 2:20:00 marathon barrier and I can tell you that never in 26 years did I ever do a 20 week training block.

My sweet spot was 16 weeks.

4 months of proper training is more than sufficient time for you to absolutely crush your personal best at the 26.2 mile distance.

If I would advise anything if someone were to ask me about a 20 week block is this.

Jog for 4 weeks thinking nothing of pace whatsoever then get on one of my 16 week marathon training schedules and dominate the event.

Why Choose RunDreamAchieve Marathon Plans?

I’ve been coached by three of the world’s top distance running coaches.

Jack Hazen

Dr. Joe Vigil

Lisa Rainsberger (1985 Boston Marathon champion).

These three individuals shaped my training and racing philosophy.

I had a dream of breaking the 2:22:00 marathon barrier back in 2007.

I had a personal best of 2:43:36 and couldn’t quite seem to get the marathon distance down right.

My best at the time for 10 miles was 51:53 but something was telling me the marathon was my best event.

What was the greatest change in training that I included in RunDreamAchieve 5K to marathon training plans?

Targeted pace training.

I can assure you that it is an adjustment from doing your long runs at 6:45-7:00 mile pace and going to to 5:35-5:55 mile pace.

You may be seeking to break the 4 hour marathon or learning how to be a better marathoner.

Perhaps you have a time not as many people are seeking out like a sub 2:30 or 2:20 marathon.

The Lifestyle

I created RunDreamAchieve training plans to help provide solutions to problems many runners face.

How to sustain pace for the entire 26.2 mile distance.

It means little to say to yourself I was on 8:30 mile pace through 20 miles but blew up in the last 10K and missed my goal by 20 minutes.

These are common issues we all as marathoners have, at one time or another, faced.

It isn’t a good feeling when you fail but failure is part of success.

A 20 week marathon training plan is a bit too long and most of the world’s top runners focus in on 12 to 16 week programs.

4 months is a long time but it is sufficient time to prepare well for the marathon distance.

5 months often times leaves runners feeling lethargic, over trained and is very tough to get a good taper in.

I’m not saying 5 months is out of the question but would highly advise on a 16 week marathon training plan instead.
