After an epidemic ravage had disrupted their plans in India’s Navy city of Mumbai, its mega event ‘WNC Navy Half Marathon’ returned with much enthusiasm at MMRDA ground for Aircraft Carrier Run (21.1 km), Destroyer Run (10 km) and Frigate Run (5 km).

Vice Admiral Girish Luthra, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief Western Naval Command also presented prizes at this event.

Organizing Committee

On 19 Nov 2017, Mumbai hosted the second WNC Navy Half Marathon which proved a tremendous success and has quickly become one of Mumbai’s premier marathon events. 2016’s inaugural run attracted over 5000 runners while this year registrations have more than exceeded that number – even surpassing it! This year’s edition has three categories for runners to participate: 21 km Aircraft Carrier Run; 10 km Destroyer Run and 5 km Frigate Run.

The Indian Navy has long promoted fitness, health and camaraderie among its citizens through this race. Their objective is to build stronger ties with Mumbai and other cities through this event, and the fifth edition is scheduled for November 2022 at Mumbai with participants enjoying an experience to remember along an historically significant route that passes some iconic precincts of South Mumbai.

Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar will open the race, while its organizing committee strives to make each edition bigger, better and stronger.


The WNC Navy Half Marathon is an amazing running event to participate in each year, growing tremendously since its inaugural running in 2012. Now in its fifth edition and scheduled to take place on 20 November in Mumbai by Western Naval Command of Indian Navy. Participants will get to experience all that South Mumbai offers as they run this exciting course designed by course designers to give participants an in-depth tour.

The race will commence from Azad Maidan and travel along Marine Drive towards Haji Ali and Ballard Estate – which holds onto our city’s maritime history. This year’s theme “Clear Coasts and Clean Seas Make Healthy Lives” stresses the significance of protecting oceans and coastlines as part of sustainable lifestyle practices; therefore only biodegradable materials for its branding will be used and its carbon footprint reduced through using 100% recyclable paper cups and branding material.

Steady Race Growth

In its inaugural year, this run attracted over 5000 runners and has steadily grown ever since. This year will be bigger and better than ever, with top runners in each category receiving artifacts from the Indian Navy as prizes and mementoes for taking part. Sachin Tendulkar will open proceedings by flagging off this historic race!

Run participants can choose between three distinct categories – 21 km Aircraft Carrier Run, 10 km Destroyer Run and 5 km Frigate Run. Winners in each category will receive a smartwatch by Titan as a prize; additionally prizes will be distributed among top men and women within each age group as well as top boys and girls across various age categories.

This race will take place over a flat course with gentle slopes. Runners will receive water and refreshments at aid stations along the route as well as medical and washroom facilities. In addition, runners will receive free race t-shirts and medals. In addition, organizers will provide pacers to help runners keep pace with faster runners.

Last year’s inaugural WNC Navy Half Marathon saw over 15,000 participants across two categories – Aircraft Carrier Run and Destroyer Run – take part. Organized by Western Naval Command to commemorate Navy Day 2016, this marathon has since grown immensely and is now one of India’s premier running events.

The fourth edition of Mumbai Marathon was inaugurated by Admiral Superintendent of Naval Dockyard (Mumbai), in Ballard Estate. To honor both its history and sustainability goals, 100% recyclable paper cups and branding material were provided at this environmentally-friendly race; runners were encouraged to carry a refillable water bottle throughout their run.


The Indian Oil WNC Navy Half Marathon is an annual event organized by the Western Naval Command to mark Navy Day, designed to promote fitness and camaraderie amongst people of Mumbai. Held at Azad Maidan in South Mumbai, it includes three different race categories – Aircraft Carrier Run, Destroyer Run, and Frigate Run – that offer unique racing experiences along historically significant routes.
