The Wineglass Marathon is a fast and scenic point-to-point race through the wineries of Southern Finger Lakes region, making it an excellent opportunity for runners looking to improve their personal records. Additionally, this event includes half marathon and 5K events. This race, held every first weekend of October and featuring an entirely flat and fast course with an average net downhill grade of 200 feet, attracts many tourists from across the country. Livestrong and Active Times have named it as one of the Top 25 Destination Marathons, making this race an excellent option for runners looking to qualify for Boston or run their inaugural marathon.
This year's race started at 7:45 a.m. and runners will need to travel by bus from either Bath or Corning to reach the starting line – approximately 30 minutes in each case – before signing a waiver and providing photo ID before participating. Swag includes long-sleeved tech shirts, ankle socks and stemless wine glasses designed by local artists which will be awarded as rewards to top three finishers in each age category.
The race begins at Philips Lighting's parking lot north of Bath and covers five miles total; initially flat terrain allows runners to establish their pace. Around four miles in, runners experience a 40-ft. drop in elevation as the course passes through Savona town before winding its way through Cooper's Plains and Campbell before reaching Corning for its downtown area and final mile downhill finish line run-up. This world-class endurance event takes place annually at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio and includes marathon, half marathon, 10K, 5K and 1K kids race events.
