16 weeks is my favorite length of time to train for any race distance. That being said, everyone is different and some like 4, 8 and 12 week blocks which we also have here at RunDreamAchieve. The 5K involves a great deal more of a speed and stamina focus as compared to the half-marathon and marathon distances.
The trick with running faster from the 5K to marathon is training at or far below goal 5K race pace. This is where speed work comes into play. If you want to run a sub-3 hour marathon you need to run 6:50 mile pace or faster. It becomes a bit more difficult when your 5K race pace is, say, 5:10 pace. You cannot run very long at 4:10 mile pace in training but you can at 5:50 pace if you were training for a 3 hour marathon.
You may be trying to break the 20-minute 5K or aiming to run a under the 16 minute barrier. This 16 week 5K training plan will help give you the training concepts needed to achieve both.

Why Following A Strong 16 Week 5K Training Program Matters
You want to follow fundamentals that create results. The reason I created this 16 week 5K training schedule was to help you work smarter and get better results. The same workouts you will be following helped me drop my 10K best from 33:02 to 31:09, half marathon from 1:10:29 to 1:07:06 and marathon from 2:43:36 to 2:19:35. Leverage is the name of the game when it comes to racing well at the 5K distance.
This is more of an anaerobic event so speed along with stamina is critical to success. Quality over quantity rules in all distance from the 5K to marathon. The problem is many runners fall into the numbers game. They think running more mileage is the answer. I did too. I got up to 140 miles a week training for the marathon and was running too high even while training for the 5K in college.
How did I drop so much time? I started to work smart listening to my mentors which saw the flaws in my training and helped me to make some critical changes. All RunDreamAchieve 5K to marathon training plans are built around these same fundamentals. Leverage. The capability to produce better results with less work.
