It begins on the Asian side of Istanbul near the July 15 Martyrs Bridge and crosses over the Bosphorus for a stunning view of both sides. From here, participants are led through some of Istanbul’s most iconic sites such as the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia.

Running the Istanbul Marathon offers runners a flat terrain that makes it easy to stay motivated and on track. Plus, at many water stations along the course they can grab something nutritious to fuel their bodies before embarking on this challenging endeavor.

Kenyan athletes Sheila Jerotich and Jackline Chepngeno battled for victory on the women’s side, while Ugandan Victor Kiplangat took home the men’s title. Jerotich finished in 2:24:15 while Chepngeno finished with a time of 2:20:18.

Is There a Marathon in Istanbul?

The race starts near 15 Temmuz Sehitler (15 July Martyrs) Bridge on the Asian side and finishes in Sultanahmet Square, Old City Istanbul, between the Blue Mosque and Egyptian Obelisk. Although the route varies each year, runners always follow a path from Sultan Ahmed Mosque through historical peninsula before finishing along the shores of Bosphorus.

How to Run a Fast Marathon

The Istanbul Marathon is one of the fastest marathons in the world. Kenyan Ruth Chepngetich set a women’s World Half Marathon Record at this year’s race, finishing in 1:04:02 in Istanbul.

Organisers are aiming for both the men’s course record and Turkish allcomers’ record with seven athletes on the start list boasting personal bests of sub 2:08. Ethiopian Solomon Berihu and Huseyidin Esa lead the current list with PBs of 59:17 and 59:32, respectively.

Ethiopian Amane Gobena, who ran a career best of 2:23:40 in Istanbul last year, and Turkey’s Ummu Kiraz are expected to do well. The local road running talent passed 5km in 17:50 and 10km in 35:25 respectively last year.

Gobena took control of the race at 25km, passing 30 kilometers in 1:46:03 and maintaining her pace until crossing Istanbul’s finish line with a time of 2:23:40, eight seconds faster than her previous lifetime best.

How Do Marathon Runners Run So Fast?

Marathon runners are highly-trained athletes. Many are biomechanically gifted and possess high genetic potential, yet they still require extensive practice to build up the muscle endurance necessary for running 26.2 miles.

Furthermore, they must have the capacity to run rapidly for extended periods of time; these capabilities are known as aerobic capacity and VO2 max.

How Do You Run a 7 Minute Mile Marathon?

Improve Marathon Time by 30 Minutes

Ethiopian Sechale Dalasa took home first place for women with her blistering 2:25:54 effort. She beat fellow Ethiopians Melesech Tsegaye and Ethlemahu Sintayehu finishing second and third respectively with times of 2:29:01 and 2:31:38.
