So, to cover this distance successfully and in record time you have to get away from running long and slow every single weekend. Below is an example of the type of faster long runs I was doing prior to running 2:19:35 for the marathon.
- 1 mile jog, 7 miles@5:30 mile mile pace, 2 miles easy, 2 miles in 10:05, 5 miles@6:00 mile pace, 2 miles easy, 1 mile in 4:55, 1 mile cool-down jog (21 miles)
I would always run the following week’s long run at an easy and relaxed 8 to 9 minute mile pace. So, always alternate and a faster long run followed the next week with an easy, aerobic effort. Again, adaptation is vital in order for to see the highest return on your time investment.

I would recommend running easy for at least 4 weeks before starting a training plan for any race distance. I would recommend at least 12 weeks and preferably between 16 to 20 weeks in length. Again, the longer your build up the better off you are going to be. You will not be in a rush to get into great shape. In addition, will not be cramming your training in a shorter, 8 week training plan. Of course, runners can get into descent shape in a matter of 2 months.

I have run 2:19:35 for the marathon and competed in this event at a high level. No, it was not easy to break the 2:20 marathon barrier. In fact, I trained for a decade to improve that 2:19:35 and the closest I could get was 2:26:42. So, you need tenacity and follow a legitimate training plan to get this event right.
