Exercise Workout Program
Runners seeking an exercise workout program are going to get countless ideas from countless amount of people online and elsewhere.
There is more content being created in a day than has been created in the past few decades since the creation of the internet.
How do you know what is the best advice to listen to?
Are people getting results that you a seek?
This is an indicator of if the advice being shared is worth your time.
I have been involved in the sport of distance running since 1992 and began at the young age of 15.
I only wish I would have started earlier but what I value when I am seeking out advice is how long has someone been focused on the activity?
Have they encountered failure and did they quit when they experienced it?
Those that have my attention are professionals who are seeking to help other people and don't have all of their attention on their own ego.
What I will be sharing is the same advice I received from some of the world's top exercise physiologists, runner and coaches.
There are resources on this website that will also assist you in your exercise workout program goals as an endurance athlete.
Common Sense, Not Common Practice
Running is much like life.
You can trade time for money and get taxed the highest or you can seek to be an investor and earn while you sleep.
The sad reality is that although it should be common sense to value one's time more than money, most people have been taught to conform and do what they see everyone else around them doing.
If you are seeking a workout program that is going to produces result for you, be willing to accept the challenges that come with it.
Running faster longer takes a specific plan and one that doesn't involve running easy everyday when it is a specific race goal you may have in mind.
Everyone can run easy and you may not have a time goal in mind in regards to your exercise pursuit but most people do.
I had to come to grips with the fact that as a 2:43:36 marathoner for me to break one of my short-term goals of running under the 2:22:00 marathon barrier, I could not keep thinking the same way.
6:14 per mile pace and 5:25 per mile pace for 26.2 miles are light years apart.
Doing 22-24 mile long runs at 7:15 mile pace was not going to cut it.
An exercise workout program that will yield you results as they pertain to racing faster times is running faster during your long runs and adopting a new way of thinking.
One that does not include limitations.
If all you have to do is run faster more often in training why don't more people do it?
Comfort is one of many reasons.
It doesn't hurt or challenge anyone to run easy but it will running fast.
You have to make healthier choices.
Self Sabotage
Runners self sabotage themselves into believing they don't have the capability to run a specific time.
Everyone has belief in themselves but often time the goals we set are not challenging enough.
Your goal may be to run your first 5K or break the 2:30 marathon.
We all have aspirations but if you have as your goal to run faster at the mile to marathon distance you have to create the reality that you seek in your mind first.
I visualized breaking the 2:22 marathon barrier constantly.
We think in pictures so if you think of your car immediately you will see it in your mind in the form of a picture.
Think about the time you want to run and see yourself running across the finish line with your dream goal time on the clock.
I wanted 2:21:59 and got 2:19:35 instead.
I knew arriving to the Army World Class Athlete Program back in January of 2007 as a 2:43:36 marathoner with a 51:52 10-mile best, a sub 2:22:00 marathon time was going to challenge me in every way.
How does anyone go from 6:14 to 5:25 per mile pace for the marathon distance?
How does someone go from 1:45 in the half-marathon to 1:25?
Different strategies, different mindsets.
Are you using healthier products at home and for your own self use?
Anything that will give you the advantage.
You absolutely must believe in what you are doing, there can be no doubt and any exercise workout program worth its grain of salt is going to put its users to the limit.
I have seen far too many runners second guess their capability.

If everyone is doing the same thing that means it is most often an average activity.
I observed the masses and I did the opposite – Holton Buggs
The biggest difference between people who are successes and those who accept where they are at in life as normal, is their willingness to persist when others quit.
I have always been fascinated with successful runners and businessmen and women.
I think business and running are quite similar.
They both ask and demand of the individual either to be all in for success or to have one foot in and one foot out, to just get by.
They both demand that you believe in what you are doing.
The problem I have seen with runners is not that they are not capable of running faster or meeting their personal goals, they simply are unaware of how to.
It is much the same to people who are making $40,000 a year.
It isn't that they want to remain at $40,000 a year, they simply are unaware to get to $250,000 doing the same job.
Trading time for money is the absolute worst way to obtain it – Bob Proctor, entrepreneur
The reality is if you are within the wage system this isn't always feasible.
Why?
You are not operating with leverage.
Leverage means doing more with less.
Running 140 miles a week seems to be the answer for many runners who think one must run high mileage to run a faster marathon.
Not so.
I ran a sub 2:20 marathon off of 85-90 miles per week and ran some of my worst races at 130-140 miles a week.
Can you meet your fitness or racing goals with less?
Yes but how?
Lessen the amount of running you do at slower paces and spending more time at higher heart rates to better prepare yourself to race at speeds you want to without slowing down.
Use leverage.
There are people who earn money while they sleep, who have decided to make money work for them.
There are also people who trade 40-90 hours per week and trade their time for it.
This isn't smart when time is limited, money is plentiful and the government can print it at will.
The same goes with people who blindly follow the exercise workout program mentality that teaches athletes not to truly challenge themselves.
Talent vs Training Smarter
Are there runners who were born with great genetics?
Absolutely.
Bernard Lagat is going to always be faster than me at the mile and probably every other event.
That being said, Lagat wouldn't be that much faster than me at the marathon distance.
You have to find what your strengths and weaknesses are.
The determined athlete who is willing to persist for decades is going to out perform the talented athlete who half prepares for a year or two – Nathan Pennington
I do not consider myself an athlete with much talent but I do know I have an enormous work ethic in my athletic career as well as in business.
I do not go into anything that I don't believe in and I most certainly believe in other people in my business and as an athlete.
Life is short and you have to go all-in to live unlike the majority of people that surround you.
I would much rather learn a trade in 2 to 3 years that would pay me residually for life than to slave away at a 9 to 5 job being taxed the highest as an employee.
Again, common sense but not common practice.
The majority of people are operating below their capability and are listening to what their friends, family, television say.
This isn't to be harsh, it often times is the truth.
I did for sometime.
I listened to my family that to earn money I have to work hard, even if it meant I was not using leverage that those who do not work for money use.
It took a wake up call in Afghanistan to teach me that lessen well.
I had a conversation with a woman yesterday who told me “I'll never be a millionaire”
My reply?
Says who?
We become what we think about – Earl Nightengale
Your fitness and running goals are up to you and for you to live them out you have to seek out exercise workout program advice that is going to produce fruit.
We often seek out physical training.
What is the best way to prepare for a marathon?
How many miles do I need to run to finish a 5K?
How many miles a week do I need to finish a half marathon?
How do is about 5%, the other 95% has to do with mental training and mindset.
Are you training like everyone else?
Is your income where it is because you listened to the age old advice that you need to go to school, get good grades and get a job?
Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish – Steve Jobs, Apple
Do you ever wonder why the richest people in the world do not have to work for money but have created systems that make money work for them?
The whole reason I am writing this post on exercise workout program mentality is to simply cause you to think in a different way.
Stop thinking you don't have what it takes.
You do.
I failed several times before I broke 2:20 for the marathon but I never lost enthusiasm.
7 years later and I am still training to break my long-term goal of 2:15:00.
How many people do you know who will continue persisting for years or even decades to get what they want?
The quickest way to success is to fail more often.
You won't hear that from normal people.
You will often hear it from those who are oddly the most successful, professionals who are not afraid of failure but accept it as part of the process to achieving goals and dreams.
