MBNA Chester Marathon
The MBNA Chester Marathon is the UK’s only international marathon to start and finish from historic Roman/Medieval city of Chester. This course is fast and undulating, offering runners an ideal opportunity to set a personal best time (PB). It travels through picturesque medieval streets in Old Town – which may feature cobbled surfaces – before venturing out into Cheshire/North Wales countryside before returning along River Dee to finish on Castle Drive. Essar Chester Half Marathon saw thousands of runners line up to run its 13.1 mile course after its long absence due to coronavirus pandemic. Participants and spectators alike showed great support as thousands lined streets in Chester city to cheer them on!
The race begins and finishes at Chester Racecourse in city center Chester, offering a fast and largely flat course that travels northwest from town before turning west towards Saughall Village before looping back around for an unforgettable finish outside town hall and cathedral in front of crowds. The Essar Chester Half Marathon provides an ideal introduction for new runners while also serving as an invaluable training experience for full marathoners who wish to pursue full marathon distance races in future. Runners taking up this challenge will receive both technical tees and medals; chip timing technology as well as drinks stations every three miles makes this event truly worthwhile.
Half Marathon Route
The Essar Chester Half Marathon provides new runners with an ideal stepping-stone race, offering all of the iconic landmarks of Chester such as its Amphitheatre, Roman Walls, Eastgate Clock and Cathedral as well as part of Pilgrim’s Way for participants to experience England’s stunning countryside. The course itself is mostly flat with some short hills or gradual climbs concentrated towards the second half of its route, providing scenic opportunities and offering spectators ample chances to cheer on runners. It finishes near Chester Town Hall and Cathedral – providing runners with an ideal atmosphere in which to reach their goals.
Starting on Sunday at 8 am, participants of the Essar Chester Half Marathon can pick up their packets in Wilmer Park near 400 South Cross Street in Chestertown, Maryland 21619. All runners and walkers will receive an official “Chestertown Challenge Half Marathon & 5K Run/Walk” tech shirt as well as food and refreshments at the finish line; runners will additionally receive a commemorative finishers medal.
Parking at Chester Racecourse will open its gates from 6.30am, charging PS4 cash per car. A helpdesk and access routes to the city center via Sealand Road and New Crane Street will be in operation, although for 20-30 minutes around 8.55am this road may be closed for maintenance purposes.
Top three male and female overall finishers from each age group will receive awards that will be sent post-event, while all other finishers will be honored with a technical tee and commemorative medal.
First aid stations can be found both at the start/finish area and along the course, including at each turnaround and half-way point; there are also hydration stations at every turnaround and at half-way point on both courses; additionally there will be water stations located at mile markers for half marathon runners and turnarounds for 5K participants.
Full Marathon Route
The Full Marathon route follows that of the Half Marathon course but includes an additional loop through Stretford village, making this course even more demanding and energy intensive. Well-marked with directional arrows and mile markers, water stations are located every two miles on the left side of the road with both water and Nuun hydration being available at each station – as well as getting some at mile 23-25!
The course begins on a flat, gentle rolling terrain before entering Chester City Centre and heading out north-west from there, passing Little Mollington Hall before traversing Lea by Backford and Saughall villages before returning back into Parkgate Road and the city centre where there will be an exciting grandstand finish outside Chester Town Hall and Cathedral – something CH1ChesterBID Company has agreed upon with this race to maintain and benefit local retailers with increased footfall during this event.
There may be some challenging hills along the second half of this course, but you’ll also experience gorgeous woodland running paths and stunning vistas along the way. Organisers refer to it as Britain’s “most beautiful marathon”, and while this claim lacks hard evidence it is hard to disagree with them.
The Essar Chester Half Marathon provides an ideal introduction for novice runners and is an invaluable precursor for anyone aiming to run their first full marathon in future.
