Wilmslow Half Marathon was established in 1984 as part of the Wilmslow Running Festival and typically held during March each year. It has become an extremely popular road running race that boasts elite runners like England Commonwealth Games athlete Jonny Mellor.

An inquest has been opened into his death. A Cheadle Hulme-based solicitor collapsed and died only a mile from finishing a half marathon he had entered to commemorate his birthday celebrations. An investigation is currently ongoing into this tragic event.

Distance

The Wilmslow Half Marathon is a flat and one lap race on rural roads around Wilmslow and its surrounding villages, giving runners an ideal chance at setting personal best times. As part of Wilmslow Running Festival – also featuring 10k and fun runs – participants have the opportunity to participate in this race as part of its lineup.

At the finish line, runners receive free photos and goody bags as part of an incentive for finishing. Organisers have gone the extra mile to keep the course as scenic as possible by closing any relevant roads for the duration of the race; their organising committee also accept feedback and suggestions from runners themselves.

Course

The Wilmslow Half Marathon is an uninspiring, one-loop course over mostly country roads. Starting from beautiful Capesthorne Hall and winding its way through Siddington and Lower Withington villages, its route offers 13 aid stations with food and drinks available at each one, with their locations detailed in runner's guide maps; portable toilets are located conveniently close by at each aid station as well as start/finish lines.

Wilmslow Running Festival included not only this half marathon event but also 10km and Fun Run events, each of which was well organized, supported by spectators, volunteers, a challenging yet not too difficult course and great leg massages and goody bags at its conclusion.

Dogs are welcome to join parkrun, but must remain on short, handheld non-extendable leads at all times and are not permitted into the starting area or start line. This ensures all runners have an enjoyable experience and prevents other runner's distraction. Participants should take particular caution near roads and car parks where vehicles move quickly and should remain vigilant around other users; depending on availability marshals may be stationed at key sections to guide participants along their course.
