What you don't want is a shoe that isn't reliable and durable.
Altra Olympus 4.0 Review
The Altra 4.0 is a great shoe for trail runners. Can you still get some great training in on the roads with these shoes? Of course. That being said, the shoe is better suited for runners focused on the trails. The shoe will provide additional support for your ankle and arches when dealing with trail debris such as rocks and roots.
In addition, the shoe will provide superior cushioning for times when you run into paved sections of your path. The Olympus Altra 4.0 shoe is similar to the previous 3.0 model. Also, features a zero-drop platform like all of the other models they provide. The foot shaped toe box will ensure your foot has plenty of room and breathability while training.
Are Altras Good for Your Feet?
Yes, Altra running shoes do provide exceptional support and cushioning for your feet. You will definitely need shoes like the Altra Olympus 4.0 when it comes to trail running. We already know the level of uneven surfaces and other debris such as logs, rocks and weeds when it comes to trail running. So, you will definitely need that additional cushioning and support that the Olympus 4.0 provides.
The stack height of the shoe is 33 mm. Yes, it is a heavier shoe but not overly heavy. The shoe itself is only 11.6 ounces considering the overall look of the shoe. The Altra 4.0 olympus shoe provides substantial support and cushioning despite all the gravel, roots, mud and hills you may encounter on your trail runs.
More importantly, Altra built in great drainability with these shoes. One of the last things we want as runner is to deal with wet, water soaked shoes while trying to get a run in.
Let's face it, everyone has experienced this whether running on trails or pavement. It sucks. Also, the shoe provides world-class traction and was made for off road type running. Furthermore, the outsole of the shoe is made out of a sticky compound called Vibram Megagrip. So, you can take comfort in knowing you will have great footing while training in this shoe off road.
Does the Altra Olympus Have a Rock Plate?
Due to the to the Altra Olympus 4.0 shoe's 33 mm stack height, there is no rock plate. Of course, this is usually common when it comes to shoes that have maximum cushion. In addition, it provides the user with a shoe that is highly responsive. What you don't want is a shoe that has a thick sole and a rock plate which can make the shoe feel too stiff.
Trail running involves a lot more varied terrain as opposed to running pavement. So, the Altra 4.0 is a legitimate choice to ensure you have a shoe that can withstand all of this. Also, it features a reinforced to cap that will ensure your feet are kept away from briars, thorns and other hazards.
The Altra is not a shoe that I would recommend if you are focused on faster trail or pavement running. It is a legitimate option for runners seeking a durable shoe to keep you focused on slow, trail running.
How to Run Faster and Longer without Getting Tired
Consistency is key. Remember, it takes the body anywhere from 3 to 4 weeks to adapt to any stress load you are placing on it. So, remaining committed whether training on trails or pavement is essential. Also, don't lose enthusiasm for what you are doing. Yes, it will take time and effort for you to start running faster times. A common mistake I see a lot of runners making is doubting themselves when they don't see results as fast as they would like.
My recommendation is focus on a longer build up for your races. I have training plans here that range anywhere from 1 mile to the 50K distance. In addition, run in duration from 4 to 16 weeks in length with new 20-week training plans in the works. Again, the longer the build up the better the preparation for your races. Investing in shoes like the Alta Olympus 4.0 is a great way to take care of yourself when training in all conditions.
Run Faster During Your Long Runs
Long, slow distance runs create outstanding long, slow distance runners. of course, your goal may not be to run a specific race distance in a specific time. That being said, most runners have time goals in mind. So, you need to start varying the pace of your long runs. I was able to improve my marathon best from 2:43:36 to 2:19:35 using this strategy. So, the only way to do that is to spend a higher percentage of your weekly mileage training at or below your goal race pace.
Speed matters no matter what your event is. Yes, distances like the half-marathon or marathon are highly aerobic events. That being said, you will still need speed training in order to get your goal race pace to feel easier. Are you more of a trail runner? Well, you will still need to develop your speed to be better over the trails as well. Again, how well you are able to clear lactic acid at sub-maximal or maximal efforts will determine how fast you get across that finish line.
Speed training also recruits most fast twitch muscle fibers. Remember, running easy doesn't provide this physiological benefit. So, you have to focus on training at your Vo2 max effort.
