How To Break The 3 HR Marathon

There are key strategies needed to consider to break the 3 hr marathon.

A recent article stated that in 2011 only two percent of people that started a marathon around the world finished in under 3 hours.

It is equivalent to averaging 6:50 per mile or 4:15 per kilometer. No breaks.

What are marathoners doing to get under this time barrier and making it look easy.

Does it require talent? 

Are athletes that break the 3 hour marathon any different than you and I?

What Does A Sub 3 Hour Marathon Require?

Well, aside from being able to hold a quality pace for 26.2 miles it does require a small amount of talent.

The one thing that no exercise physiology test can measure is the power of the mind. 

There is no question about it. You may need a small amount of talent but you had best hope you have an even larger amount of tenacity and focus.

Athletes that can sustain the sub 3 hour marathon pace have trained in a specific way.

Their combination of long runs, interval training, hill repetitions and speed work are a part of it the process.

What else?

Proper nutrition? Do you have to have a perfect diet to run under 3 hours for the marathon? No.

There are runners all over the world who don’t necessarily have the perfect diet but do it.

You already know that if you are putting in the miles you can still allot some time to enjoy food.

That being said, eating McDonalds french fries and chesseburgers everyday is not too bright if a sub 3 marathon is your goal.

Is The 3 Hr Marathon Impossible For Everyone?

One, I don’t entertain the idea of impossible. Again, the power of the mind is not something anyone on this Earth truly understands.

There are people that can pick up cars during an emergency, remote view and see things from great distances.

There are endless examples of people doing incredible things around the world daily.

What is needed to break 3 hours is an incredible amount of focus, grit, determination and commitment. 

Anyone who relies on talent and doesn’t work will be beaten in the race by someone with little talent and enormous commitment.

Are you interested or committed?

There is a massive difference between the two. You cannot let a bad race dictate your capability of breaking a 3 hr marathon. 

There are far too many athletes who second guess themselves when it comes to running a faster marathon time.

What Is Needed?

Sub-6:50 per mile or 4:15 per kilometer pace can only become easier by training at speeds at or below this.

The biggest reason I dropped 21 minutes and went from 2:43:36 to 2:19:35 was a change in the way I conducted my long run.

Did other factors come into play?

Was doing repeat miles at 4:45-47 per repetition at altitude play a part? Perhaps

We’re the tempo runs I was doing at altitude between 5:20-35 mile pace contribute. Of course.

There is no one workout that will yield a sub 3 hr marathon. It is a combination of a lot of things.
